What Safety Measures Should Be Taken During High-Voltage Withstand Voltage Testing

1、 Preparation measures before the experiment

Personnel Qualification and Training

The personnel participating in the experiment must undergo professional training in high-voltage experiments, be familiar with the experimental process, equipment performance, and safety operating procedures, and possess corresponding qualifications (such as high-voltage electrician certificate, etc.).

Clearly designate the person in charge of the experiment, with unified command from the person in charge, and strictly prohibit unlicensed personnel from operating or unrelated personnel from watching.

Experimental plan and risk assessment

Develop a detailed experimental plan, specifying the experimental objectives, steps, voltage levels, duration, and emergency response plan.

Assess potential risks during the experimental process (such as equipment insulation failure, operational errors, etc.) and develop targeted prevention and control measures.

Equipment inspection and insulation testing

Check whether the experimental equipment (such as high-voltage test transformers, voltage regulators, voltmeters, ammeters, etc.) is intact, whether the wiring is firm, and whether the grounding is reliable.

Perform insulation resistance testing on the test sample (using a megohmmeter) to ensure that its insulation performance meets the experimental requirements and to avoid breakdown during the experiment due to poor insulation.

Preparation of experimental site

Clear safety warning signs (such as "High Voltage Danger" and "Do Not Approach") should be set up in the experimental area, and isolated with fences, warning lines, etc. Unauthorized personnel are prohibited from entering.

The experimental site should be kept dry and tidy, avoiding the presence of flammable and explosive materials or conductive debris (such as metal tools, accumulated water, etc.).

If conducting experiments outdoors, it is necessary to avoid harsh weather conditions such as thunderstorms and strong winds, and if necessary, install rain and sun protection facilities.

Preparation of personal protective equipment

Experimental personnel must wear qualified personal protective equipment, including:

Insulated gloves (insulation performance needs to be regularly tested);

Insulated boots (or insulated shoes);

Safety helmet (to prevent equipment components from falling or electric arc burns to the head);

Long sleeved cotton work clothes (to avoid direct skin exposure and reduce the risk of electric arc burns).

Prepare auxiliary insulation tools such as insulation rods, insulation pads, and insulation blankets, and ensure that they meet safety standards.

2、 Safety measures during the experimental process

Wiring and operation specifications

Strictly follow the experimental plan when wiring, connect the low voltage side first and then the high voltage side; Connect the test sample first, then connect the power supply. After the wiring is completed, two or more people need to jointly check and confirm that there are no errors.

The boosting process must be slow and uniform, closely monitoring the readings of the voltmeter and ammeter, as well as the status of the test sample (if there are any abnormal noises, smoke, sparks, etc.).

During the experiment, it is strictly prohibited to touch the high-voltage leads, test subjects, and high-voltage parts of the experimental equipment. During operation, the body must maintain a sufficient safe distance from the high-voltage area (determined by the voltage level, usually at least 1 meter for 10kV and above).

Guardianship and Emergency Response

During the experiment, a dedicated person should be set up to monitor the situation. The monitoring personnel should stand in a position where they can clearly observe the experiment, remind the operators to pay attention to safety at any time, and immediately order the experiment to stop if any abnormalities are found.

If there is a breakdown of the test substance, a sudden increase in current, an abnormal decrease in voltage, or other dangerous situations during the experiment, the power supply should be immediately cut off (first disconnect the high voltage side, then disconnect the low voltage side), and the equipment should be completely discharged before processing. Live operation is strictly prohibited.

Discharge and grounding requirements

Before each voltage increase, after voltage decrease, and after the experiment, the test object, high-voltage lead, and experimental equipment must be fully discharged (using a dedicated discharge rod, with a discharge time of not less than 3 minutes), and reliably grounded to prevent residual charges from causing electric shock.

When discharging, it is necessary to first reliably connect the grounding terminal of the discharge rod to the grounding grid, and then use an insulated operating rod to slowly hook the discharge rod into contact with the high-voltage part to ensure complete discharge.

prohibitions

It is strictly prohibited to change experimental parameters (such as voltage, time) or wiring methods without authorization during the experimental process.

It is strictly prohibited to perform unrelated operations (such as organizing tools, answering phone calls, etc.) in high-voltage areas.

During the experiment, if you need to leave the site, you must first cut off the power and discharge to ground.

3、 Safety measures after the end of the experiment

Equipment and site restoration

After the experiment is completed, first cut off the high-voltage power supply, then cut off the low-voltage power supply. After complete discharge and grounding, the wiring can be removed (the removal order is opposite to the wiring: first remove the high-voltage side, then remove the low-voltage side; first remove the power supply, then remove the test object).

Organize experimental equipment, tools, and personal protective equipment, check if the equipment is in good condition, record experimental data and abnormal situations.

Clean up the experimental site, remove warning signs and isolation facilities, and restore the site to its original state.

Experimental Records and Summary

Record the experimental process, data, and equipment status in detail. If any abnormal situations occur, analyze the reasons and include them in the experimental report.

Summarize the implementation of safety measures during the experimental process and improve the subsequent experimental plan based on the existing problems.

4、 Additional measures for special circumstances

Multi device series connection experiment: If multiple devices are connected in series during the experiment, it is necessary to ensure that each device is reliably grounded to avoid electric shock caused by potential difference.

Large capacity equipment experiment: When conducting voltage withstand tests on capacitive devices (such as capacitors, cables, etc.), attention should be paid to the charging and discharging process to prevent overvoltage breakdown.

Night experiment: Adequate lighting should be ensured to avoid operational errors caused by poor visibility.
